This is the site of the bloodiest day in
American history (during The Civil War). The battle at Antietam
claimed more than 23,000 men killed, wounded, and missing in one
single day, September 17,1862, and led to Lincoln's issuance of
the Emancipation Proclamation. Along this path was some of the
most ferocious bloodshed. (You can hear a pin drop out here in
the quiet wind…very haunting.)
