Silverado Canyon
A favorite place where we go to hunt for fossils—primarily
gastropods from the Turonian age of the Cretaceous period. In
the Silverado Canyon area of Orange County (just outside the rustic
town of Silverado), where the river bends at the narrows, there
is an exposure of Turonian aged shale and limestone. A great place
to dig and prospect. (And very weird to think that about 14 million
years ago, this mountainous area was under water—though
the shells, ammonites and everything else old and aquatic bares
it out.) (PHOTOS OF FOSSILS WILL FOLLOW SOON.)
